Overview
A/UX Interactive Training is an on-demand training environment for the A/UX operating system. With it you can learn a lot about A/UX and UNIX fundamentals. There is also a complete Sales and Demonstration system included for Apple and reseller salespeople.
The training should be used in the A/UX operating system to take full advantage of commands and capabilities. You can also “browse” through the training on any Macintosh system, but you won’t be able to execute UNIX commands unless you are running A/UX.
The training materials are designed so that you need only one copy for all the users on your A/UX system. You don’t need to make additional copies in individual user directories.
Using the training
Once installed in A/UX, the training is accessible in two ways:
• By selecting “A/UX Training” from the Apple menu
• By double-clicking the AUX Training icon (a HyperCard stack).
You should install the training on a hard disk. It runs very slowly from a CD or file server.
CD Installation:
Make sure your CD drive is connected and your compact disk is installed. You will see the icon when you log in.
File server installation:
After you log into A/UX, use the Chooser to locate your file server. Then locate the A/UX Interactive Training folder, open it up, and follow the instructions.
AppleLink:
Refer to the instructions included in the AppleLink training folder.
A/UX Installation Instructions
Step 1
Log in to your A/UX System as “root”.
If you don’t know how to log in as root, or if you don’t know the root password, ask your system administrator. If you have just installed A/UX and have not yet set the root password, then there isn’t one and you can log in as root with no password.
If you are installing from a file server, use the Chooser to locate the appropriate server. If installing from CD, you should see the CD icon on your A/UX desktop. In either case, locate the folder “AUX Interactive Training”.
You must be logged in as root to complete the installation.
Step 2
Copy the AUX Interactive Training folder to your root (/) A/UX partition, then open the folder by double-clicking.
Installation can take a few minutes if you are installing from a file server — there is nearly 8 megabytes of material in this folder. To save disk space after installation, you will remove this folder from your A/UX disk.
Step 3
Move the HyperTools folder to your A/UX “usr” folder.
The HyperTools folder contains the actual training software. Simply drag the HyperTools folder into the A/UX “usr” folder. Once installed in “usr”, you won’t need to access the HyperTools folder to use the training. (It contains about 50 files).
NOTE: Do not move the HyperTools folder to your “users” folder — don’t get the names confused!
Step 4
Copy the AITLauncher application to your A/UX System Folder.
Drag the AITLauncher application to your A/UX System Folder. Your A/UX System Folder is located in “/:mac:sys:System Folder”. To locate your A/UX System Folder:
• double-click the “mac” folder, then
• double-click the “sys” folder
and you should see the “System Folder.” When done, close the “sys” and “mac” folders.
This application works in conjunction with the AUX Training DA, allowing you to access the training as a DA by selecting “A/UX Training” from the menu.
If user accounts have individual System Folders, place a copy of AITLauncher in each one. Make sure each copy is named “AITLauncher”. User account folders are located inside the A/UX “users” folder.
Step 5
Install the AUX Training Desk Accessory into your A/UX System file.
Double-click the suitcase file, then install the DA into your A/UX System file. If you need to search for the A/UX System file, follow this path:
mac
sys
System Folder
System <— This is your A/UX System file.
If there are individual System Folders for user accounts, repeat this step for each of the user accounts.
Step 6
Install the Training Fonts into your A/UX System File.
Follow the same path as you used to install the A/UX Training DA.
If necessary, repeat this step for those user accounts that have individual System files.
Step 7
If necessary, install the HyperCard fonts with the Font/DA Mover.
HyperCard and a Home stack are included inside your HyperTools folder. If you have not already installed HyperCard fonts, do so now. Follow the same path as before to locate your A/UX System file.
Repeat this step for those user accounts that have individual System files.
Step 8
Copy the AUX Training stack to your root (/) partition.
This stack performs two jobs: It initializes the the training software files for use in A/UX, and subsequently provides an alternate way to launch the training. You can use this stack or the A/UX Training desk accessory at your discretion. If you use the stack, you can place copies anywhere in your A/UX file system. You should keep a copy in your Home directory and in individual user directories.
Please don’t launch this stack until you have completed Step 9.
Step 9:
Once everything is installed, close the AUX Interactive Training folder and remove it from your A/UX partition.
This step is necessary to save disk space and to avoid having duplicate copies of the HyperTools folder. Don’t worry about keeping a “backup” copy of the HyperTools training — it’s already “backed up” for you on the CD, File Server, or AppleLink (wherever you got it).
Remove the folder by dragging it to the trash. When asked whether you want to remove applications, answer “yes.” You may want to keep a copy of the installation guide for future reference. In any case, make sure you do not have duplicate copies of the HyperTools folder on your A/UX system. There should be only one copy inside your “usr” folder.
Step 10
Initialize the training system by double-clicking the AUX Training stack.
Initialization takes about a minute. When completed, you will enter the A/UX Interactive Training System. At this point you can go through the training, or quit and complete the rest of the installation steps.
Step 11
(Optional) Place a copy of the AUX Training stack in individual user directories.
If you have installed the AITLauncher and DA files properly, individual users will be able to select “A/UX Training” from their Apple menu to run the training. The AUX Training stack provides an alternate way to enter the training system.
Step 12
Log out and log back in again; you should now be able to use the training.
To use the training:
• Select “A/UX Training” from the Apple menu, or
• Double-click the AUX Training stack.
If you’ve done the installation properly, any user on the system should be able to launch the training.
If the training doesn’t launch —
• Make sure the “HyperTools” folder is inside your “usr” folder and is not nested inside another folder.
• Make sure there is only one HyperTools folder on your A/UX system.
• Check whether the user account has a System Folder. If it does, make sure the AITLauncher and AUX Training DA have been properly installed in the user account.
• Log out and log in as root again, then double-check all the installation steps.

MACINTOSH SYSTEM INSTALLATION
You cannot use the A/UX Training desk accessory in the Macintosh Operating System, because the AITLauncher application requires that the HyperTools folder be located inside the UNIX “usr” folder. But you can “browse” through the training on any ordinary Macintosh computer. To use the training in an ordinary Macintosh system:
Step 1
Copy the A/UX Interactive Training folder to your Hard Disk. Remove the AITLauncher and AUX Training DA files.
Step 2
Install the Training and HyperCard font files.
Once installed, you can drag the files to the trash to save some disk space.
Step 3
To use the training, double-click the AUX Training stack.
Note: This stack must be located at the same level as the HyperTools folder, or it will not launch the training. Alternatively, you can open the HyperTools directory and double-click the “HyperTools Home” stack.

You can copy the stack “Install A_UX” to any Macintosh computer and review the installation procedure. The stack can also print a complete (and brief) installation guide. Before dragging the entire AUX Interactive Training folder to your hard disk:
• Open the AUX Interactive Training folder (on CD or file server)
• Open the HyperTools folder
• Drag the “Install A_UX” stack to your own system
The “Install A_UX” stack covers installation on Apple and other (third-party) disk drives. You don’t need to be running under A/UX to get full use out of this stack.
